Summer Shootout: Week 1

Tuesday's Race Recap

LOWE'S MOTOR SPEEDWAY -- Tuesday's in Concord, North Carolina mean race day, and to Jordan Anderson, that meant the best day of the week. The first round of the Summer Shootout series took place Tuesday night with 223 competitors filling the pit area of the famous race track. Anderson was very optimistic about his chances Tuesday night for a victory because of his successful runs in the Legends Car series throughout the early 2007 season.

In his 8 lap qualifying race for the feature race later that night, Jordan started in the 3rd position. When the race started Jordan immediately took over the lead and continued to lead, until the last lap when he was bumped out of the way by another competitor and had to settle for a 2nd place finish. Jordan's heat race finish would place him starting in the 8th position for the feature race, where only 28 cars would be allowed to race, sending some competitors home. Jordan was excited about his starting position and especially since his Nick Pistone Racing crew provided him with a great handling car.

When the green flag flew on the 28 Legend Pro car's, Jordan Anderson was off taking the high groove into turn 1. This proved to be a smart move as two other drivers wrecked on the bottom groove allowing Jordan to pass by them and move into the 6th position. When it was time to go green, the "Choose Rule" is implemented. As the writer's on the LegendsNations website summed it up the Choose Rule is as follows, "One of the many changes at this year’s Summer Shootout is the way the “Choose” rule works. If you are not familiar with the “Choose” rule for restarts, this is it in a nutshell:  Under caution, when the cars are single file, an official holds up a sign that says "Choose." At that point, starting with the leader of the race, a car can choose whether or not they want to start on the inside or outside lane. The benefit? If the first five cars choose to start on the inside, the sixth place car would then have the option of starting on the outside of the front row."

That move to the outside of the front was exactly what Jordan did, he moved from 6th place to 2nd place for the restart. When the green flag flew Jordan and the other drivers were off. The race only went another half-lap before another caution flag was waved again, putting Jordan back to the 6th position because of the last completed lap. On the restart the officials decided to skip the Choose Rule. That didn't keep Jordan from moving towards the front though, because again when the green flag was out Jordan started passing cars, and was up to 4th spot when he hit a patch of oil on the racetrack. This sent Jordan into a major slide, but luckily Jordan was able to hold onto the car, but not before falling back to the 8th position. With only 4 laps remaining in the race, Jordan only had enough time to pass one more car and put himself in the 7th position when the checkered flag flew.
