Word, JesusHebrews 1
“God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in
the prophets in many portions and in many ways,
in these last days has spoken to us in His Son,
whom He appointed heir of all things, through
whom also He made the world”
(Heb.
1:1f.).
Does God still
speak? Yes! How does God speak? In His Son!
Long ago God’s
spoken word bore fruit in the created world. He
spoke through a burning bush, a donkey and via
the larynx of many disheveled prophets. He
offered His bread of life through dreams and
visions, and He even commissioned angels to
manifest His sovereign hand.
Most folks never
hear God speak because they have no interest in
what God has to say. He speaks words revealing
His character, His desire for all people, His
pursuing power and His transforming wisdom.
Nevertheless, people are so busy chasing fool’s
gold they have lost all interest in the gold,
silver and precious stones of the sweet Savior’s
voice.
John the Baptist was
the last Old Testament prophet and the first New
Testament evangelist. He broke the centuries of
silence when he came out of the wilderness
preaching, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is
at hand” (Mt. 3:2). John directs your attention
to Jesus saying, “This is He on behalf of whom I
said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher
rank than I, for He existed before me.’ And I
have seen, and have borne witness that this is
the Son of God. For He whom God has sent speaks
the words of God; for He gives the Spirit
without measure” (Jn. 1:30, 34; 3:34).
God spoke three
times during Jesus’ life providing you with a
digest of His desire: “This is My Son, My Chosen
One; listen to Him!” (Lk. 9:35). God reserved
His finest wine for these last days. God has
spoken in Jesus and God’s voice cannot be heard
in one’s heart unless the hearer first knows
Jesus, God’s concluding and consummate speaker.
Why must you seek
Jesus’ voice? Jesus is the heir of all things.
Has not all authority in heaven and earth been
granted to Him? (Mt. 28:18). Everything belongs
to Jesus.
Why must you seek
Jesus’ voice? God made the world through
Jesus. There would be no heaven and earth but
for Jesus, God’s Alpha and Omega (Jn. 1:3; Col.
1:15-17).
How well do you hear
God? How familiar are you with Jesus?
Familiarity breeds affection.
“So shall My word be
which goes forth from My mouth; it shall not
return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I
desire. For the word of God is living and active
and sharper than any two-edged sword, and
piercing as far as the division of soul and
spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to
judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart”
(Isa. 55:11; Heb. 4:12).
